When dealing with translucent objects, or when managing large scenes, you're gonna need to do some sorting yourself:

Radix sort is only good for integers, even though it's suggested you and cast from float to a long integer (more memory allocation for the conversions):

Quick sort is meant to be pretty efficient and works with just a comparison operator rather than how Radix works. However, it can be overkill on a list that's already mostly sorted (which is going to be the case for quite a few frames while rendering):
